Quick Description
A very pretty setting among rolling hills and small farms on the edge of the Lake District National Park, the tiny village of Ennerdale Bridge takes its name from the stone bridge over the River Ehen. The parish church and inn are on the south side of the bridge, the school and another inn are on the north side.
Snippets of History
In prehistoric times iron was smelted here, and centuries later haematite was mined in the valley. The weaving industry helped the village to develop. The River Ehan has been used as a source of power for milling over the centuries.
Odd Facts
St Mary’s church, dated 1856, was constructed on the site of a medieval chapel. It was enlarged in 1885. Wordsworth’s poem ‘The Brothers’ is set in the churchyard. Wordsworth didn’t like tourists and the poem begins: “These tourists, heaven preserve us!
